Damien Hirst, Eternal Rest, pink butterfly on black background, highlighting themes of life and mortality in an etching.

Etching in Colors on Paper // Damien Hirst’s Eternal Rest (2009) is a limited edition etching that encapsulates his fascination with themes of life and mortality. The artwork features a delicate pink butterfly set against a stark black background, highlighting the beauty and fragility of life. The symmetry and vibrant color of the butterfly contrast with the dark, somber background, creating a visual dialogue on existence and impermanence. Hirst, known for his provocative explorations of life and death, uses the butterfly motif to symbolize the transient nature of life. Measuring 47 x 39.1 cm, this etching invites viewers to reflect on mortality and the ephemeral beauty found in nature.

What is Uncanny?

The Uncanny is a concept described by psychologist Sigmund Freud as the eerie or unsettling feeling that arises when something familiar is presented in a strange or unfamiliar way. Surrealist artists, who aimed to reveal the subconscious and merge it with reality, often utilized this concept by combining familiar objects in unexpected and bizarre ways. This approach created a sense of discomfort or unease, challenging the viewer's perception of reality.
