'Passage 6' by Daido Moriyama is a Polaroid from 1998–1999, measuring 10.5 × 8.5 cm. Shot through a glass shopfront divided by a central frame, it shows a dense accumulation of rotary telephones and decorative objects arranged on shelves behind the window. The glass doubles and flattens everything — tree branches from the street bleed into the merchandise, and the photographer's presence is half-absorbed into the display. Moriyama's signature approach — handheld, fast, without compositional tidiness — is legible even in this small-format work. The Polaroid was a deliberate choice in his late 1990s practice, its chemical immediacy and fixed square-ish frame producing a different order of intimacy than his 35mm street work. The layered reflections compress exterior and interior into a single plane, consistent with his long-running preoccupation with urban Japan as a place of overlapping, unstable surfaces.
