'Bye-Bye Polaroid 19' by Daido Moriyama is a Polaroid photograph made in 2008, measuring 10 × 9.5 cm. A stack of napa cabbages, each bound with green plastic tape, fills the frame almost entirely, photographed at close range in what appears to be a market storage area. The Polaroid format introduces warm colour drift and soft focus edges — qualities that sit at an odd distance from the stark, high-contrast black-and-white street work for which Moriyama is best known. Emerging from the Provoke movement of the 1960s, Moriyama built a practice around immediacy and the fragmentary nature of urban perception. The 'Bye-Bye Polaroid' series, made as instant film production wound down, turns banal commercial subject matter into a record of a photographic medium's disappearance, with the artist's signature hand-written in ink on the white border below.
