Silkscreesn Hand Embossed 140lb Cold Press Aquarelel Paper // Charles Hinman’s Jasper is a minimalist silkscreen print from 2014, created on hand-embossed 140lb cold-press Aquarelle paper. This work demonstrates Hinman’s interest in geometric abstraction, featuring a composition of intersecting, angular shapes with bold accents of purple, green, and orange. The vibrant colors highlight the edges of the embossed forms, lending a sense of depth and movement within the flat surface. The intersecting lines and color contrasts create a dynamic visual rhythm, guiding the viewer’s gaze through an interplay of sharp angles and empty spaces, embodying Hinman’s exploration of space, form, and the subtle complexity within minimalism.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
