Just Like That

Allen Jones's Dancing Gate, 1993, mixed-media pochoir of two figures in warm tones enclosed within a gate-like frame.

Pochoir/stencil on paper; signed - unique work // Dancing Gate by Allen Jones, a mixed-media work from 1993, combines pochoir (stencil) techniques with soft, abstract forms that evoke movement and intimacy. The composition features two semi-abstracted human figures rendered in warm, earthy tones of red and orange, enclosed within a gate-like frame that seems to capture them mid-dance. The hazy, diffused edges give the figures a ghostly appearance, as though they are caught in a fleeting moment or memory. This framing device and the organic forms within create a sense of both separation and connection, as if the figures are simultaneously bound and liberated within their space. The work’s gradient background adds depth, emphasizing the ephemeral nature of the scene. Signed by Jones, Dancing Gate is a unique exploration of form, movement, and the boundaries between figures and their environment.

What is appropriation?

Appropriation in art involves using pre-existing images or objects with little or no modification. This technique has played a significant role across various art forms, including visual arts, music, performance, and literature. In visual arts, appropriation refers to the practice of adopting, sampling, recycling, or borrowing elements—or even entire forms—of existing visual culture, integrating them into new works to create meaning or critique.
