Lithograph in colors on Arches paper. Initialed in pencil by the artist and signed in pencil by the author Carlos Franqui. Alexander Calder’s Lo oscuro invade (1970) is a color lithograph on Arches paper that combines graphic spontaneity with poetic text. The composition presents a fluid interplay of black ink forms, including a stylized figure in motion, surrounded by abstract shapes, spirals, and organic patterns. Bold red circles punctuate the surface, while a flowing blue band anchors the lower edge, introducing a rhythmic balance of color. Alongside the imagery, handwritten Spanish text by Carlos Franqui weaves through the composition, reinforcing themes of mystery, darkness, and transformation. Calder’s characteristic linear freedom and sense of movement are evident, as he merges drawing and language into a unified visual field. The work reflects his late exploration of gesture, symbolism, and the relationship between image and word.

What is kinetic art?
Kinetic art is an international movement that emerged in the 1920s and gained prominence in the 1960s, referring to art that involves both apparent and real motion. It encompasses any medium that includes movement, either relying on actual motion for its effect or being perceived as moving by the viewer. Early examples include canvas paintings designed to create optical illusions of movement. Today, kinetic art often refers to three-dimensional figures and sculptures, such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. The movement covers a variety of styles and techniques that frequently overlap.
