Robert Cottingham est né à Brooklyn à New York. Il a tout d'abord étudié l'art à l'Institut Pratt de Brooklyn et ensuite au Centre Arts College of Design de Pasadena. Au début de sa carrière en tant que concepteur graphique il a eu un intérêt particulier pour la signalisation et le lettrage, tandis que son admiration pour un autre artiste de New York Edward Hopper l'a influencé dans son utilisation de la lumière et de l'ombre pour créer une atmosphère. Il est l'un des plus importants peintres hyperréalistes, un style qu'il a développé au cours des années 1960, ayant la photographie assimilée dans ses peintures. Il est particulièrement connu pour les travaux représentant l'Amérique urbaine, y compris les signes, les vitrines et les bâtiments. Cottingham utilise son appareil photo comme un livre et les photographies de ses sujets comme une base pour son art, en élargissant les images plutôt que de les reproduire tout simplement. Pour lui, les lettres et les chiffres de la publicité commerciale et les signes représentent un langage visuel illustrant le mode de vie américain. Les images de tous les jours sont transformées par l'artiste, en utilisant une méthode de grille dans laquelle il projette une image photographique sur du papier, la création d'un dessin pour déterminer la proportion et la taille la plus adaptée à l'image. Ceci est ensuite suivi par des peintures à l'aquarelle ou à la gouache et parfois des impressions. Souvent, il va produire plusieurs remaniements de l'image originale dans les différents médias, y compris la lithographie et la sérigraphie. Robert Cottingham a été élu à la National Academy of Design, d'abord à titre d'associé en 1990, puis comme étant un académicien en 1994. Ses œuvres peuvent être trouvées dans toutes les galeries importantes en Amérique et une rétrospective de son travail a été exposée par le Smithsonianin 1998. Plus récemment, son travail a dérivé des composants dans des machines telles que les caméras et les machines à écrire, en utilisant des modèles de papier pour déterminer les angles géographiques des objets.
