A concept artist, known for his illusionist photography skills, created a series of performance called FOTOTOT (photo of death.) The series served as an emphasis to the transience of human selfhood through the regress of mechanical reproduction. Though FOTOTOT served as an end of an era for Ulay with his photography art, his fascination by the phenomenology of the photographic medium continued. This led him to further investigate how bodily experiences could be translated into an artistic form.Something he was able to do, with his romance, and art Partner, Marina Abramovi?, through a series of indelible images.Their intense passion or art could be seen through images such as ‘The other: Rest energy.’The image was bold, and thought-provoking, as Marina stood on one side, holding on to the bow, while Ulay held on to the arrow on the other side, pointing it directly to his lover’s heart.They went on to collaborate until 1988, where their professional, and romantic relationship came to an end.In 2015, Frank Uwe Laysiepen, or Ulay, as he is best known in the art world, launched a lawsuit against his former partner, as he fought for the acknowledgement of his work during their time together, claiming that Marina was taking the sole credit for collaborations.
