// This untitled etching and aquatint from Roberto Matta’s Così Fan Tutte series, produced in 1970, features surreal, elongated figures interacting within a textured, abstract environment. Limited to just 26 prints, the composition is alive with fluid, humanoid forms in soft shades of pink and beige, positioned in dynamic, playful poses. These figures appear suspended or engaged in enigmatic actions atop a layered, rock-like terrain that blends organic shapes and ambiguous spaces. The background varies between muted grays and soft blues, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that enhances the surrealistic tone. Matta’s use of intricate line work and nuanced color blending brings a sense of movement and depth, inviting viewers into a realm that feels both introspective and fantastical. This piece is a compelling example of Matta’s exploration into the subconscious, capturing a world that exists somewhere between reality and imagination.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
