// This untitled etching and aquatint by Roberto Matta, part of the Così Fan Tutte series from 1970, is a surreal composition that combines fluid, abstracted figures with an ambiguous, textured landscape. Limited to an edition of 25, this piece features elongated humanoid forms in muted shades of pink, beige, and earth tones, spread across a layered, rock-like terrain. The figures engage in enigmatic postures and interactions, some appearing to emerge from or merge into the rocky background. The backdrop transitions from dark, earthy textures to a misty, ethereal blue, enhancing the surreal quality of the scene. Matta’s delicate linework and nuanced color palette draw the viewer into a dreamlike space where boundaries between form and environment dissolve. This artwork invites interpretations tied to the subconscious and inner psychological landscapes, reflecting Matta’s fascination with exploring the abstract realms of human experience.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
