Plate 6 from Fog Gog Magog by Roberto Matta, created in 1971, is an original color lithograph on paper measuring 18¼ x 23¾ inches. This surreal composition, part of a deluxe edition of only 100 prints, reflects Matta’s signature style of visual chaos and subconscious exploration. Abstracted humanoid figures float and interact across a fractured landscape, centered around a television-like device displaying symbolic imagery. The color palette—dominated by pastel yellows, blues, and reds—enhances the dreamlike and satirical tone. Matta’s work often interrogates the intersection of technology, society, and the psyche, themes subtly woven into this vivid and dynamic scene.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
