Untitled XXI (from Come Detta Dentro Vo Significando)

Etching by unknown artist titled Le Palais d’hiver with surreal cityscape in red, blue, and ochre on textured background.

Catalogue: CR Ferrari 210. Le Palais d’hiver (1976) is a vivid etching that draws the viewer into a complex architectural dreamscape rendered in surreal hues of red, blue, and ochre. Measuring 66 x 50 cm, this work explores the fusion of mechanical forms and abstracted environments, suggestive of a fantastical city in flux. The title, which translates to The Winter Palace, may allude to both historical grandeur and a collapsing structure, amplified by the swirling, gestural lines and atmospheric textures. Part of an edition of 100, the print is catalogued as CR Ferrari 210.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
