Sheet size: 30 x 24 cm - Signed in pencil on the lower right. // Demoiselles by Roberto Matta is a vibrant limited edition etching and aquatint that features a surrealist scene of elongated human figures interacting within an abstract space. The central figure, standing tall and with arms outstretched, is surrounded by other figures in dynamic poses, seemingly engaged in a ritual or dance. The background is filled with colorful shapes and swirling lines, giving the scene a dreamlike, otherworldly quality. The bright colors—yellows, reds, greens—stand out against the textured blue and gray backdrop, creating a lively and playful atmosphere. Matta’s signature surrealism is evident in the abstract forms and the fluid, interconnected elements that blur the boundaries between figures and space.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
