Etching and Aquatint on Japan paper - Signed and Numbered, including Monogrammed on lower right // Roberto Matta’s Damné Par L’Arc en Ciel is an etching and aquatint print that showcases his signature surrealist style. The composition is rich with abstract forms, vibrant colors, and an intricate interplay of lines. The image is layered with a combination of organic shapes and geometric structures, giving the piece a dynamic and dreamlike quality. The earthy tones of red, brown, and green contrast sharply with bursts of vibrant colors, creating a sense of tension and movement throughout the composition. Matta's surrealist influences are evident in the way he blends figural elements with abstract forms, evoking a subconscious and emotional response. The title, which translates to Damned by the Rainbow, adds an additional layer of intrigue, suggesting themes of conflict or inner turmoil. Signed, numbered, and monogrammed in the lower right corner, this work reflects Matta’s ongoing exploration of the human psyche and the chaotic, ever-shifting nature of reality.

What is Surrealism?
Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
