Aquatint Etching on BFK Rives. AMOR (1994) by Robert Indiana is an aquatint etching on BFK Rives paper that adapts the artist’s iconic LOVE motif into Spanish. The word “AMOR,” meaning “love,” is split into two lines with bold red letters set against a vibrant blue square, evoking both pop art aesthetics and typographic design. Indiana’s use of geometric symmetry and saturated color reflects his interest in language as a universal symbol. This Spanish-language iteration connects the message of love to a broader audience, reaffirming Indiana’s belief in the power of words to carry emotional and political resonance.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
