Aquatint and gold leaf // Dog by Mimmo Paladino, created in 2002, is a limited edition aquatint with gold leaf detailing that captures a mysterious, almost mythical quality. The composition is divided into two sections: the upper half, adorned with a rich gold leaf, exudes a warm, luminous quality, while the lower half is rendered in a dark, textured aquatint that contains the image of a solitary dog. The animal, illustrated in black and white, stands out starkly against the dark background, creating a sense of isolation or contemplation. Paladino’s work often incorporates elements of ancient symbols and archetypes, and this piece, measuring 50 cm by 35 cm, evokes themes of solitude, resilience, and timelessness through its restrained palette and symbolic simplicity.

What is Transvanguardia ?
Transavanguardia is the Italian version of Neo-Expressionism, referring to an art movement that emerged in Italy and other parts of Western Europe during the 1970s and 1980s. The term translates to beyond the avant-garde. Transavanguardia arose as a reaction against the dominance of conceptual art, reintroducing emotion and reviving painting as a primary medium. The movement marked a return to mythic imagery and figurative art, celebrating a rediscovery of traditional forms and themes in a contemporary context.
