performance artist who started to make a name in the early 1970's in what was then the communist state of Yugoslavia. Abromovich studied extensively in Belgrade and Zagreb before launching her artistic career. Marina Abramovic left Yugoslavia to live in the Netherlands in he mid 1970's and then the United States. Abramovic’s work tries to alter the conventional relationship between an artist, or actor and their audiences. Instead of the performer or performers determining what happens and when it happens on stage it is left to the audience to drive the show onward. This approach was evident from early works like the Rhythm Series written between 1973 and 1974. For 12 years or so she worked alongside the German artist
Ulay (a.k.a Uwe Laysiepen) before they broke their partnership in 1988. Marina Abromovic has had a long career as an avant garde
performance and has explored aspects of the human body in depth. She has shifted the relationship between artist and audiences through her works. (
