Manolo Valdés, Reina Mariana V, lithograph collage, fragmented female portraits in pop-art style, homage to Lichtenstein and Velázquez.

Lithograph/ Collage on handmade paper - Signed and numbered // Reina Mariana V, Tribute to Lichtenstein by Manolo Valdés is a limited edition lithograph and collage on handmade paper, blending classical portraiture with pop art. This 2001 piece reinterprets Diego Velázquez’s iconic Las Meninas, showcasing Valdés' unique fusion of historical and modern styles. The artwork features fragmented portraits of a woman’s face, rendered in Roy Lichtenstein’s distinctive comic-book-inspired style, with bold lines, dot patterns, and simplified forms. The intricate, layered composition with unfinished outlines enhances the sense of movement and transformation, inviting viewers to explore the tension between classical representation and pop art aesthetics. Valdés’ tribute pays homage to both Velázquez’s masterpiece and Lichtenstein's impact on contemporary art.

What is site specific art?

Site-Specific Art is a form of artwork created to exist in a particular location, with the artist considering the site as an integral part of the creative process. Robert Irwin was a key figure in promoting this art form in California. Site-Specific Art emerged as a reaction against modernist objects, which were often portable, commodified, and confined to museum spaces. In contrast, Site-Specific Art is inherently tied to its location, challenging the traditional notions of art as a transportable and marketable commodity.
