Manolo Valdés's Mujer con sombrero IV, I, mixed media print with etching and collage, stylized woman with an ornate hat, 2002.

Etching and collage on handmade paper by Acuari . Taller Mayor, Madrid . Published in "Manolo Valdes 1981-2002 , pag.202" // Manolo Valdés's Mujer con sombrero IV, I (2002) is a captivating limited edition mixed media print that combines etching and collage on handmade paper. Measuring 167.5 x 96.5 cm, the artwork portrays a stylized female figure wearing an ornate hat. Valdés’s technique merges expressive lines with intricate collage work, adding depth and texture to the composition. The woman’s face is outlined with delicate, sketch-like lines that create an enigmatic expression, while the hat is a rich amalgamation of textures, colors, and patterns, forming a visually dominant element that contrasts with the simplicity of the facial lines. The use of mixed media enhances the sense of volume and dimension, inviting viewers to explore the interplay of forms and textures. Through this piece, Valdés celebrates the elegance and strength of the female figure, blending classical beauty with modern abstraction.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
