Etching and collage on handmade paper by Acuari . Taller Mayor, Madrid . Published in "Manolo Valdes 1981-2002 , pag.202" // Manolo Valdés's Mujer con sombrero IV (2002) is a striking limited edition mixed media print, blending etching and collage on handmade paper. This large-scale piece, measuring 167.5 x 96.5 cm, features a bold and stylized portrayal of a woman wearing a hat. Valdés employs an array of techniques and textures to create a rich, layered effect that draws viewers into the composition. The woman’s face is outlined in simple, expressive lines, giving her an enigmatic, almost mask-like appearance, while the collage elements, which incorporate patterns and fragments of text, form an intricate and ornate hat that dominates the image. The contrast between the figure’s simplified features and the elaborate headwear highlights Valdés’s skill in balancing minimalism with complexity, making this artwork a captivating blend of abstraction and portraiture.

What is site specific art?
Site-Specific Art is a form of artwork created to exist in a particular location, with the artist considering the site as an integral part of the creative process. Robert Irwin was a key figure in promoting this art form in California. Site-Specific Art emerged as a reaction against modernist objects, which were often portable, commodified, and confined to museum spaces. In contrast, Site-Specific Art is inherently tied to its location, challenging the traditional notions of art as a transportable and marketable commodity.
