Manolo Valdés' Condeduque etching with abstracted white face fragments set against a dark, textured background.

Etching; 35 signed and numbered copies; Perfect condition // Condeduque by Manolo Valdés, created in 1987, is a limited edition etching consisting of 35 signed and numbered copies. This artwork features a dark, moody composition with abstracted white forms that resemble fragments of faces or busts, set against a richly textured, shadowed background. The disjointed placement of these facial elements creates an eerie, surreal quality, as if the figures are emerging or receding into the surrounding darkness. Valdés’ use of stark contrast between light and dark, along with minimal detailing on the facial forms, emphasizes a sense of isolation and introspection. The title Condeduque evokes a historical or noble connotation, perhaps reflecting on identity and presence in the context of art history. This piece captures Valdés' skill in blending abstraction with emotional resonance.

What is pop-art?

Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
