A young boy during one of the most pivotal moments in history was about to embark on a journey that changed the course of photography. Lucien Clergue was a French photographer who took a different approach on imagery through the lens. He captured death in it's most intimate moment, he analyzed women in the nude as a landscape of beauty and femininity. He kept the pride of his roots local and captured the intensity of bullfighting. This allowed him to develop an amazing partnership and friendship with another famous artist: Pablo Piccasso. Pablo introduced Clergue into a world of different art forms allowing him to collaborate with amazing artist such as Jean Cocteau and Max Ernst. Clergue's work transformed photography in new directions by applying shadows and light to depict the image. He shot the majority of his images in black and white which allowed the viewer to observe a new kind of focal point. In 2006, Lucien Clergue was honored as the first photographer to be elected into the Académie des Beaux Arts. This allowed photography to be accepted into its own art form along with painting and other arts. Lucien Clergue also co-foundedRencontres d’Arles festival. It is a photography festival that takes place in his hometown of South France and is one of the most important photography festivals to date. Clergue, a self taught photographer, changed photography in many forms that created a revolution of artist after him to create new imagery through their lens. (
