Silicone rubber sculpture. Hand signed in pen by artist on the certificate of authenticity, stamped at the bottom ‘ LB 94 MAF 94. ‘ From ACT UP Art Box - Created in collaboration with ACT UP during the AIDS crisis, this limited-edition Art Box brought together works by leading contemporary artists including Louise Bourgeois, Kiki Smith, Lorna Simpson, Mike Kelley, and Nancy Spero. Conceived as both an artwork and a fundraising initiative, the project combined artistic experimentation with political activism, supporting ACT UP’s advocacy and healthcare efforts in the early 1990s. Louise Bourgeois’s Untitled from the ACT UP Art Box (1994) is a pink silicone rubber sculpture that merges phallic and vulval forms into a single ambiguous organic object. Soft, rounded, and tactile, the work reflects Bourgeois’s longstanding exploration of sexuality, vulnerability, gender identity, and the body as a psychological space. The smooth surface and biomorphic shape create tension between intimacy and unease, a recurring quality in her sculptural practice. Produced for the collaborative ACT UP Art Box project during the AIDS crisis, the work also carries a broader social and political resonance, linking personal experience with activism and collective response. Its compact scale intensifies the object’s physical immediacy and emotional charge.
