Joan Hernandez Pijuan – Recorrido para un espacio III, 1989 – Etching and Aquatint

'Recorrido para un espacio III' by Joan Hernandez Pijuan is an etching and aquatint measuring 56 × 76 cm. A heavy black rectangle dominates the plate, its three lower sides drawn in a single, unbroken stroke, while the top edge breaks into a row of arched, comb-like forms — looping above the border before rejoining it at each corner. The interior carries the soft, mottled grey tone characteristic of aquatint, giving the white field a tactile, atmospheric quality. Made in 1989, the work belongs to a period when Pijuan had moved away from the geometric configurations he developed after studying printmaking in Paris and returned to the looser, more instinctive mark-making of informalism. The title — loosely translated as 'path for a space' — points to his concern with the act of drawing as passage rather than boundary. The work is hand-numbered and from a limited edition.

What is Gestural?

What is Gestural?

Gestural art is a term that describes painting with freely sweeping brushstrokes. The primary goal of gestural art is to allow the artist to physically express emotional impulses. The varied, yet expressive paint marks are intended to convey the artist's inner thoughts and emotions, which viewers are believed to understand through the dynamic and spontaneous application of paint.
