Mini Electric LED Sign with Diodes in Colors. Jenny Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays 5 (1979–82) exemplifies her provocative use of text and technology to confront viewers with urgent, confrontational ideas. This miniature LED sign, measuring 4 x 4.75 inches, uses red, yellow, and black diodes to display scrolling text excerpts from her larger Inflammatory Essays project. Originally wheat-pasted in public spaces, these texts—radical, ambiguous, and politically charged—find a new context in this compact electronic format. The LED format underscores Holzer’s focus on mass communication, control, and the intersection between propaganda and poetry.

What is minimalism?
Minimalism is a style in music and visual arts characterized by pared-down designs and simplicity. It began in Western art after World War II, gaining prominence particularly in American visual arts. Minimalism draws heavily on aspects of modernism and is often viewed as a reaction against Abstract Expressionism, as well as a precursor to post-minimal art practices. Prominent minimalist artists include Agnes Martin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, and Dan Flavin.
