-Publisher: Flatiron Editions X Pace Prints NYC -Medium: Original screenprint on paper - Estate stamped and signed by the Administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat verso -Accompanied by External COA from the publishers // Jean-Michel Basquiat's 50 Cent Piece (1982-83, reprinted in 2020) is a dynamic and intricate screen-print that exemplifies his unique style of integrating text, symbols, and imagery. This artwork is filled with fragmented thoughts, diagrams, and references to social, economic, and historical themes, including mentions of the Bank of Jamaica, Marcus Garvey, and elements of Caribbean history. Basquiat’s layered approach merges chaotic sketches with words, creating a frenetic visual experience that demands closer examination. His iconic, almost graffiti-like line work, combined with a vibrant mix of colors, conveys urgency and critique, often highlighting themes of exploitation and cultural identity. This limited edition print, stamped by the artist’s estate, retains the raw energy of Basquiat’s commentary on power and heritage.

What is East Village Art?
In 1981, Patti Astor opened the first art gallery in New York City's East Village, helping to launch the careers of various artists and musicians. The gallery started small but quickly gained popularity, contributing to the emergence of art movements such as Neo-Expressionism and Street Art in the area. The East Village became a hub for these new artistic expressions. However, the gallery closed in 1985 due to waning interest.
