Ilya Kabakov is an American conceptual artist. Originally Soviet-born, Kabakov is from the Ukraine and worked for thirty years in Moscow, until about the late 1980s. After moving to the United States, he settled into Long Island where he now works and lives. Ilya Kabakov is known for his fictional memoirs and drawing and he specializes in conceptual and neo-conceptual art styles. A part of the contemporary movement, he works with a variety of mediums. Although he got his start as an illustrator for children's books, he now works mostly with drawing and other mixed medium works. Ilya Kabakov's work is displayed in galleries and permanent collections throughout Europe and the United States. Another one of Kabakov's specialties are his total installation pieces. He became known for these works in 1985 when he constructed "The Man Who Flew Into Space From His Apartment". These total installation pieces are a favorite among his followers and always attract many viewers while on display. (Artist website)
