'The Changeling' by Grayson Perry is a silkscreen measuring 75 × 60.2 cm. Against a vivid red ground, a contorted figure — part human, part folkloric grotesque — writhes mid-air, its body painted in orange, lavender and cream. Swarming around it are black birds, each labelled with a contemporary anxiety: 'Doomscrolling', 'A.I. Slop', 'Algorithmic determinism', 'Gamified dating', 'Diagnosis as identity'. A devil looms in a yellow cloud at upper right, while the lower register shifts into a pastoral scene rendered in teal, magenta and cream, populated by Victorian-era figures. A decorative border of occult-inflected symbols frames the whole composition. Perry — known for ceramic vases and tapestries that fold autobiography, cultural critique and art-historical pastiche into a single surface — applies the same strategy here: the medieval allegory of demonic possession becomes a taxonomy of digital-age pressures, with the labelling device forcing the viewer to read the image as both image and text simultaneously.
