Tryptych

Francis Bacon Tryptych 1986/1987 etching with three panels: suited man, bound nude figure, and bloodstained cloth in dark voids.

Three etchings and aquatints in colours on Arches paper. Each sheet: 35 1/4 × 20 1/2 in | 89.5 × 52.1 cm. Signed by the artist in pencil. Tryptych 1986/1987 by Francis Bacon consists of three etchings and aquatints that form a haunting narrative across a sequence of stark, theatrical spaces. The left panel shows a solitary man in a bowler hat walking forward with detachment, the central image presents a contorted, seated nude restrained by yellow cords, and the right panel depicts a hanging cloth stained with blood—possibly a veiled figure or symbolic shroud. Bacon’s precise use of space and shadow evokes a stage-like atmosphere, amplifying the emotional and psychological tension. Created in an edition of 99, this work exemplifies Bacon’s ongoing confrontation with violence, vulnerability, and human isolation.

What is figurative art?

Sometimes known as Figurativism, figurative art refers to sculptures and paintings that are clearly or specifically derived from real objects, making them representational. The term figurative art is often used in contrast to abstract art. However, since the emergence of abstract art, figurative art has come to describe any form of modern art that has strong references to the real world or actual situations.
