Aquatint on Twinrocker paper // Donald Sultan's Playing Card (Seven of Diamonds) from 1990 is a limited edition aquatint print that presents a minimalist interpretation of the classic playing card symbol. The artwork features seven red diamond shapes arranged in their traditional formation against a textured, muted gray background. The diamonds, slightly imperfect and uneven, add a hand-crafted element to the piece, contrasting with the typical precision associated with playing cards. Sultan’s signature runs vertically along the left side of the print, adding a personal touch to the otherwise stark and structured composition. This work exemplifies Sultan’s ability to elevate everyday objects into thoughtful, artistic reflections, inviting viewers to appreciate the simplicity and symbolic nature of the forms.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
