Eternal Sleep (Satin)

Damien Hirst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, preserved shark in a glass tank with formaldehyde.

Lenticular digital print on PETG plastic - Signed by the artist, and numbered - 31 x 47 in (80 x 120 cm), unframed - Edition of 150 // The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living by Damien Hirst is an iconic artwork that challenges viewers with its unsettling presentation of mortality. Originally created in 1991, this piece consists of a preserved shark suspended in a tank of formaldehyde. The shark, mouth open and poised as if in motion, evokes a powerful sense of immediacy and confrontation. Encased in a minimalist glass structure, the artwork contrasts the vitality of a predatory animal with its stark, lifeless reality, encapsulating Hirst’s exploration of death and the human response to it. The title underscores the paradox of comprehending mortality, suggesting that true understanding of death eludes the living. In this 2013 lenticular print edition, the essence of the original installation is captured on PETG plastic, bringing the viewer face-to-face with Hirst's provocative exploration of life, death, and perception.

What is Uncanny?

The Uncanny is a concept described by psychologist Sigmund Freud as the eerie or unsettling feeling that arises when something familiar is presented in a strange or unfamiliar way. Surrealist artists, who aimed to reveal the subconscious and merge it with reality, often utilized this concept by combining familiar objects in unexpected and bizarre ways. This approach created a sense of discomfort or unease, challenging the viewer's perception of reality.
