Small Standing Nude

Alberto Giacometti Buste II lithograph showing a sketch-like frontal female bust with expressive pencil-like lines.

Signed and numbered in pencil at the bottom. Buste II by Alberto Giacometti is a 1960 lithograph on paper that reflects the artist’s distinctive approach to the human figure. Executed with loose, searching lines, the work depicts a frontal female bust that appears to emerge from the blank paper, emphasizing both physical presence and psychological depth. Rather than defining every detail, Giacometti builds the figure through repeated, gestural marks that convey fragility, tension, and introspection. The expansive surrounding space heightens the sense of isolation, a recurring theme throughout his post-war oeuvre. Published by Maeght Éditeur, the lithograph was issued in an edition of 150 and is signed and numbered in pencil. Buste II demonstrates Giacometti’s mastery of expressing the human condition with remarkable economy of line.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
