Réputé pour ses natures mortes uniques et de grande taille, Donald Sultan est un artiste dont les œuvres sont riches en couleurs et en iconographie et composées de matériaux peu orthodoxes. Sa technique caractéristique renonce à l'utilisation traditionnelle de la toile et utilise plutôt la masonite comme base sur laquelle il pose des carreaux de vinyle de 12 pouces, ensuite découpés pour créer des formes géométriques et organiques.

Les espaces négatifs de l'œuvre sont d'abord remplis de matériaux tels que le goudron, le latex ou le plâtre, puis plus tard d'une couche de peinture - les œuvres qui en résultent, comme Air Strike April 22 1987, ont une finition nettement texturée. Outre sa peinture, Sultan a connu le succès en tant que graveur et sculpteur.

Qu'est-ce que le pop-art?

Fait référence à un mouvement artistique qui a commencé en Grande-Bretagne en 1955 et à la fin des années 1950 aux États-Unis. Il a défié la tradition des beaux-arts en incluant des images de la culture populaire comme les nouvelles et la publicité. Le Pop art isole parfois et enlève un matériau de son contexte et il se combine avec un autre matériau sans rapport. Ce concept s'oriente beaucoup vers les attitudes qui l'ont entraîné et non pas vers l'art lui-même. Le Pop art utilise des bandes dessinées, la publicité et d'autres aspects de la culture de masse. Il est interprété comme étant une réaction aux idées dominantes de l'expressionnisme abstrait.
