Robert Indiana est un artiste américain dont l'empreinte, AMOUR créée pour le Musée d'art moderne est devenue un timbre largement distribué pour le service postal des États-Unis en 1973. Son travail est associé au mouvement pop art. Robert Indiana a étudié à l'Art Institute de Chicago, l'école Skowhegan de peinture et de sculpture et aussi l'Edinburgh College of Art. Le travail de Robert Indiana est souvent créé avec des images iconiques encore audacieuses simples. Il utilise des numéros et plusieurs mots courts tels que HUG et EAT avec son plus célèbre étant l'AMOUR. Les mots crient de peintures dans la peinture ou des ampoules sur un fond pâle. Une étape importante dans sa carrière était quand un architecte a commandé un de ses signes EAT pour l'Etat Pavillon de New York pendant l'exposition universelle de 1964. Une autre des œuvres bien connues de Robert était sa peinture le terrain de basket utilisée par les Bucks de Milwaukee avec un grand M prenant la moitié de chaque tribunal. Robert Indiana a été à la fois une pointure théâtrale et scénographique dans des productions telles que le Santa Fe Opera, The Mother of Us All, et regarda dans le film de Andy Warhol Eat. Il est surtout connu pour l'image de l'amour où il a rempli le LO et VE sur le dessus les uns des autres disposés en carré. L'iconographie a été d'abord utilisée dans un ensemble de poèmes écrits en 1958, puis dans une peinture intitulée, L'amour est Dieu, dans une carte de Noël pour le Musée d'Art Moderne et enfin par le service postal américain comme un timbre dans leur série de l'amour des timbres. Robert a créé plusieurs images comme ses icônes LOVE en 2008 mettant en vedette la campagne présidentielle de Barack Obama. Sa sculpture de HOPE en acier inoxydable a été mise hors de Pepsi Center de Denver pendant la Convention nationale démocratique. La campagne d'Obama a utilisé ce symbole comme des pins, des autocollants, des T-shirts et d'autres articles de propagande de campagne.
