'Passage 12' von Daido Moriyama ist ein Polaroid aus den Jahren 1998–1999 mit den Maßen 8,5 × 10,8 cm. Eine schmale Stadtgasse zieht sich in den Bildraum zurück, ihre linke Wand ist übersät mit Topfpflanzen, hängenden Stoffen und einem Lamellenlüftungsgitter. Ein einzelnes Deckenlicht brennt weiß auf halber Distanz und taucht die umgebende Architektur in tiefe Schatten. Das Polaroidformat verstärkt Moriyamas charakteristische Ästhetik aus hohem Kontrast und ausgeprägter Körnung — das Bild bewegt sich an der Grenze der Lesbarkeit, dicht an komprimierter urbaner Textur. Moriyama entstammt der Provoke-Bewegung der 1960er Jahre, die die polierte Dokumentarfotografie zugunsten subjektiver, destabilisierender Bilder ablehnte. Ende der 1990er Jahre wandte er sich dem Polaroid als Verlängerung dieses Instinkts zu: Die dem Format innewohnenden Grenzen — feste Brennweite, unkontrollierte Belichtung — entsprechen seiner schnellen, handgehaltenen Methode und verstärken das Gefühl, dass das Bild ergriffen statt komponiert wurde.
