Screenprint on museum board. Signed and numbered in pencil. Published by International Images, Inc., Putney, Vermont; printed by Screened Images, Port Washington, New York. Tom Wesselmann’s Nude and Mirror (1990) is a large-scale screenprint that exemplifies his iconic contribution to American Pop Art. Rendered in bold black lines on a stark white background, the image depicts a faceless nude woman seated in front of a vanity mirror, captured mid-motion as she adjusts her hair. The simplified forms, flatness, and lack of facial detail emphasize Wesselmann’s focus on form, contour, and erotic suggestion, rather than identity. The mirror and flower vase introduce domestic intimacy, while the composition evokes both classical nudes and commercial illustration. Published by International Images, Inc., and printed by Screened Images, the edition is limited to 100, signed and numbered in pencil.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
