Composition: 10 5/8 x 12 in (27 x 30.5 cm); sheet: 14 x 14 in(35.6 x 35.6 cm) Published and printed by Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles in collaboration with the Democratic National Committee, Washington, DC. Signed, dated and numbered to lower left. Twisted Cat by Susan Rothenberg, created in 2008, is a lithograph on Hahnemühle German Etching paper, made as part of the Artists for Obama portfolio supporting Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign. In this dynamic composition, Rothenberg captures a cat in motion—or perhaps in rest—its body curled in a contorted pose with raw, expressive brushwork. Rendered in stark black on white, the piece blends figuration and abstraction, characteristic of Rothenberg’s approach to animal forms as emotional and symbolic subjects. The wild energy of the lines lends the cat a restless, almost feral presence, echoing themes of tension, resilience, and instinct.

What is Figuration Libre?
Figuration Libre is an art movement that is equivalent to the French Bad Painting and Neo-Expressionism in Europe and America. The term was coined by Ben Vautier and the Fluxus movement. In 1981, Robert Combas, François Boisrond, Hervé Di Rosa, and Rémi Blanchard formed the Figuration Libre group. The term can be interpreted as free style art, emphasizing spontaneity, freedom, and a rejection of traditional artistic conventions.
