Fine etching, hand signed by the artist. // Untitled (Portrait) by Sandro Chia, created in 1991, is a vibrant etching that combines figurative and abstract elements to create a captivating visual experience. At the center, a delicately drawn portrait in blue depicts a stylized, contemplative figure, rendered with fine, expressive lines that evoke introspection. This central figure is surrounded by an energetic pattern of swirling, organic shapes in earthy tones of green and beige, which adds depth and movement to the composition. The juxtaposition of the detailed portrait against the bold, abstract background emphasizes the figure's sense of isolation or introspection within a chaotic environment. Chia, associated with the Italian Transavanguardia movement, often merges traditional techniques with expressive gestures, inviting viewers to explore themes of identity, emotion, and the human condition.

What is Transvanguardia ?
Transavanguardia is the Italian version of Neo-Expressionism, referring to an art movement that emerged in Italy and other parts of Western Europe during the 1970s and 1980s. The term translates to beyond the avant-garde. Transavanguardia arose as a reaction against the dominance of conceptual art, reintroducing emotion and reviving painting as a primary medium. The movement marked a return to mythic imagery and figurative art, celebrating a rediscovery of traditional forms and themes in a contemporary context.
