The title, meaning A Season in Hell, references the famous work by poet Arthur Rimbaud, adding a literary depth to the visual composition. The image features masked figures entwined in a complex, almost balletic pose, positioned on an angled line that enhances the sense of precarious balance. The background is dark, with a subtle circular outline that frames the figures, giving the piece a theatrical and otherworldly aura. Dzama's use of black and white contrasts with the delicate line work, lending the piece an eerie and enigmatic quality that invites interpretations around themes of duality, inner conflict, and psychological tension. The work, limited to 20 collages, captures Dzama's signature style of blending innocence with haunting, exploring the dark, surreal undertones of human experience.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
