Marc Quinn – Labyrinth TS (172) Monochrome, 2012 – Pigment print

Pigment print on wove paper. Hand-signed and dated.

'Labyrinth TS (172) Monochrome' by Marc Quinn is a pigment print measuring 140 × 92.2 cm, from a hand-numbered edition of 20. A single enlarged fingerprint fills an egg-shaped form at the centre of the sheet, rendered entirely in white — the ridges cast faint shadows that give the image its only tonal variation. The whorl at the lower centre spirals outward through concentric arcs, interrupted by the characteristic breaks and bifurcations of an actual print. Quinn has made the human body — in its biological specificity rather than its idealised form — a persistent subject throughout his career. Here, the forensic marker of individual identity is stripped of ink and colour, rendered monochrome and monumental, so that what normally passes unseen becomes the sole subject.
