Archival pigment print - Numbered and signed on the back // Choices by Jessica Stockholder is a dynamic archival pigment print created in 2019. The composition merges photographic realism with drawn elements, presenting a layered collage effect. In the foreground, a sketched hand, rendered in gestural black and pink lines, reaches out, appearing superimposed on a photograph beneath. The background photograph captures a fragmented scene with bright colors and abstract objects, evoking a sense of spontaneity and movement. Stockholder’s work plays with dimensionality, inviting the viewer to ponder the relationship between the physical and the represented, between reality and artifice. The piece is both playful and thought-provoking, reflecting Stockholder’s interest in the materiality of objects and the choices involved in visual perception.

What is site specific art?
Site-Specific Art is a form of artwork created to exist in a particular location, with the artist considering the site as an integral part of the creative process. Robert Irwin was a key figure in promoting this art form in California. Site-Specific Art emerged as a reaction against modernist objects, which were often portable, commodified, and confined to museum spaces. In contrast, Site-Specific Art is inherently tied to its location, challenging the traditional notions of art as a transportable and marketable commodity.
