Jean-Michel BASQUIAT | Undiscovered Genius | Screen-print available for sale on composition gallery

Signed by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, Administrators of the Estate of Jean-MIchel Basquiat on verso - Stamped by Estate and Flatiron Editions - Published by Flatiron Editions, 2019 (After Basquiat; postume edition.) // Undiscovered Genius by Jean-Michel Basquiat is a vibrant, chaotic screen-print that reflects the artist's fascination with African American history, music, and symbolism. Originally created in 1982, this piece includes references to the Mississippi Delta, a central region in the history of the blues and Black culture in America. The artwork is layered with scribbled words, symbols, and figures such as a griot, representing a traditional African storyteller and historian, and a violin, likely symbolizing music and cultural heritage. The words slave ship, Mississippi, and undiscovered genius appear repeatedly, emphasizing themes of lost histories and overlooked contributions. Basquiat’s style here combines drawing and text, creating a powerful visual narrative that challenges the viewer to explore deeper meanings and connections. This posthumous edition, published by Flatiron Editions in 2019, is signed by the administrators of Basquiat’s estate.

What is East Village Art?

In 1981, Patti Astor opened the first art gallery in New York City's East Village, helping to launch the careers of various artists and musicians. The gallery started small but quickly gained popularity, contributing to the emergence of art movements such as Neo-Expressionism and Street Art in the area. The East Village became a hub for these new artistic expressions. However, the gallery closed in 1985 due to waning interest.
