Screenprint on Museum Board - Signed by Gerard Basquiat, the Administrator of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat at the time of publishing - The posthumous release Flexible (1984/2016) by Jean-Michel Basquiat is a posthumously released screenprint based on an original painting from 1984. The image features a powerful, skeletal figure with exaggerated facial features, rendered in Basquiat's raw, graffiti-inspired style. The figure appears enclosed within a looping red and black form, suggestive of containment or circuitry, while bold outlines in yellow, green, and orange energize the composition. Painted originally on a slatted wooden fence, the texture is preserved in the print, enhancing the artwork’s street-art origins and emotional intensity. Signed by Gerard Basquiat on behalf of the estate, this edition of 85 continues Basquiat’s legacy of fusing African diasporic identity, anatomy, and power with urban visual language.

What is Figuration Libre?
Figuration Libre is an art movement that is equivalent to the French Bad Painting and Neo-Expressionism in Europe and America. The term was coined by Ben Vautier and the Fluxus movement. In 1981, Robert Combas, François Boisrond, Hervé Di Rosa, and Rémi Blanchard formed the Figuration Libre group. The term can be interpreted as free style art, emphasizing spontaneity, freedom, and a rejection of traditional artistic conventions.
