Henry MOORE | Sisters with Children (C. 544) | Lithograph, 1979 — available on Composition Gallery

Lithograph in colors, on T.H. Saunders paper. Signed & numbered in pencil. Literature: Cramer 544. Printed by Curwen Prints Ltd, London Published by Raymond Spencer Company Ltd for The Henry Moore Foundation, Much Hadham. // Two hunched, faceless torsos crouch side by side against a pale grey ground, each cradling a rounded, child-sized bundle low against the body. Built from broad, dripping strokes of black ink with only a scratch of white left bare for the skin, the figures are more sculptural mass than portrait, their identical hunched posture creating a quiet rhythm of repetition. The bundled children read almost as an extension of the mothers' own bodies, folded protectively into the same continuous silhouette — Moore's mother-and-child preoccupation doubled and stripped to its barest, most monumental shorthand.

What is Surrealism?

Surrealism began in the 1920s as an art and literary movement with the goal of revealing the unconscious mind and unleashing the imagination by exploring unusual and dream-like imagery. Influenced by Sigmund Freud’s theories of psychoanalysis, Surrealist artists and writers sought to bring the unconscious into rational life, blurring the lines between reality and dreams. The movement aimed to challenge conventional perceptions and express the irrational aspects of the human experience.
