Henry MOORE | Reclining Figures | Mixed Media, 1939 — available on Composition Gallery

Pencil, crayon, chalk, watercolour, pen and ink on paper laid on thick card. Hand-signed by artist, Signed and dated 'Moore/39.' (lower right) Henry Moore Foundation No.: 1426. // Across a warm peach-toned wash, four reclining figures unfold in sequence — bone-and-cloth bodies sketched in fine pencil, crayon, chalk, watercolour, pen and ink — each shape carrying the embryonic sculpture about to emerge from it. The drawing is laid on thick card, hand-signed and dated 'Moore/39.' lower right (Henry Moore Foundation No. 1426). 1939 is the cusp on which Moore's wartime vocabulary is born: shelter drawings, reclining bronzes, the great body-as-landscape language. To acquire this is to anchor a collection in the very source of twentieth-century British sculpture.

What is abstract art?

Abstract art uses form, shape, line, and color to create a visual experience without attempting to represent external reality. The composition exists independently of the world's visual references, focusing on expressing ideas and emotions through non-representational means.
