16 colour silkscreen print on Somerset Radiant White Tub Sized 410gsm Paper. XXX (2023) by Harland Miller is a bold 16-colour silkscreen that merges the language of pop art with the aesthetic of vintage book covers. Printed on thick Somerset paper, the work features an oversized, abstracted pink “X” on a radiant red background, blending graphic intensity with painterly texture. The piece recalls Miller’s iconic Penguin-inspired book series but replaces text with raw symbolism, amplifying the visual impact. The title “XXX” suggests adult themes or censored content, adding a provocative layer to the otherwise playful composition. As with much of Miller’s work, irony and visual nostalgia intersect to critique both culture and communication.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
