Frank Gehry (Canada/USA, 1929–2025) was a Canadian-born American architect renowned for his innovative contemporary buildings, many of which became iconic landmarks around the world. Among his best-known works were the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain; the Dancing House in Prague; the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles; the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris; and 8 Spruce Street in New York City.
Gehry's architecture was distinguished by its experimental approach, postmodern influences, and inventive use of found materials and unconventional structural forms. He was often associated with the California Funk movement, which embraced the creative use of everyday objects, although his work extended well beyond its principles. He was also frequently linked to the Santa Monica and Los Angeles schools of architecture, despite these not being formally defined artistic movements.
Throughout his career, Gehry employed materials such as stainless steel, corrugated metal, and glass to create buildings that often contrasted dramatically with their surroundings. His bold designs attracted both widespread acclaim and criticism, with detractors arguing that they disregarded context and conventional notions of form.
Beyond architecture, Gehry worked in set and exhibition design, created a jewelry collection for Tiffany & Co., and designed furniture and clothing. His architectural practice also played an influential role in the development of software for architectural design.
