Marble sculpture, hand-carved, unique work.
'La naissance de l'amour' by Eva Claessens is a marble sculpture standing 120 cm tall, in which two entwined figures emerge from a densely textured rock mass. The upper half is finished to a smooth polish — two bodies pressed together, arms folded inward, heads inclined — while the lower base retains the raw, pitted surface of the stone, pocked and uneven as if still mid-formation. This deliberate contrast between resolved figuration and unworked material is central to Claessens' sculptural practice. Known for over two decades of figurative work rooted in direct observation of live models, she extends her 2D investigations of the human body into three dimensions — treating the sculpture itself as a fresh canvas. The piece belongs to this ongoing transposition, where the intimacy she captures in paint is recast in the physical weight and luminosity of white marble.
