Silkscreen with hand applied black Silica on Sauders Waterford paper // Donald Sultan's Orange and Black, March 22, 2011 is a limited edition silkscreen print that plays with the contrast between deep, dark tones and bright pops of color. The composition features abstract black flower shapes against a similarly dark background, with each bloom marked by a bold orange center. The use of hand-applied black silica on Sauders Waterford paper adds texture and depth to the otherwise flat silkscreen surface, creating a tactile experience for the viewer. The minimalist color palette—primarily black and orange—highlights Sultan’s interest in geometric abstraction while maintaining a connection to organic forms. This work is a striking study in contrast, both in color and form, blending the boundaries between nature and abstraction.

What is pop-art?
Pop Art is an art movement that began in Britain in 1955 and in the late 1950s in the U.S. It challenged traditional fine arts by incorporating imagery from popular culture, such as news, advertising, and comic books. Pop Art often isolates and recontextualizes materials, combining them with unrelated elements. The movement is more about the attitudes and ideas that inspired it than the specific art itself. Pop Art is seen as a reaction against the dominant ideas of Abstract Expressionism, bringing everyday consumer culture into the realm of fine art.
