Chuck Close Marta/Fingerprint direct gravure etching portrait formed from dense black fingerprint patterns

Direct gravure etching. Chuck Close’s Marta/Fingerprint (1986) is a direct gravure etching that translates a photographic portrait into a dense network of overlapping fingerprints. Printed in an edition of 45 and measuring 54 1/8 x 40 3/8 inches, the work exemplifies Close’s innovative printmaking practice of the 1980s. The sitter’s face emerges from layered, swirling impressions of ink, each fingerprint acting as an individual unit within a larger grid-like structure. From a distance, the image appears sharply detailed and photographic; at close range, it dissolves into abstract whorls and tactile marks. By constructing likeness through touch, Close links personal identity with the unique pattern of the fingerprint, reinforcing themes of individuality, repetition, and process.

What is conceptual art?

Sometimes referred to as Conceptualism, this is an art form where the idea(s) or concept(s) behind the work take precedence over material concerns and traditional aesthetics. Many conceptual artworks can be created by anyone simply by following written instructions. The concept or idea is the most essential aspect of the artwork.
